Another theory, although it is, in some ways, similar to the idea of communist Smurfs. The Smurfs are, actually, all single components of a large collective intelligence. Each smurf represents a facet of this intelligence's personality (painter, the artistic side, smurfette the feminine side, etc.) with a central processing system (Papa Smurf) which all ideas must flow through. Why else would they use the word 'smurfy' as a generic descriptor. It was actually a trigger mechanism, similar to a neuron firing in the brain! Also, ever notice that even though NEW Smurfs kept arriving, there were ALWAYS 101 Smurfs? Did the Smurfs practice ritual killing to keep their numbers constant? Or maybe, much like a person with multiple personality disorder, when a new personality facet to the mind, or smurf, arrived, it would simply take over for an old one... hmm...
