Sunday Lecture Notes
| Natural Helpers = Friends, coworkers, neighbors, church, etc. | |
| Professional Helpers = Educators, licensure, code of ethics, professional organizations we have respect for... if we had more coworkers, friends, mentors, etc. - we wouldn't need professional (like Social Work) help. | |
| Bachelors level practice is generalist. | |
| Specialist has a generalist background, but also has a specialist background. | |
| Private Practice - Masters level. Advantages and disadvantages - Isolation, beareaucracy, etc. Social workers within agencies: Primary relationship (child welfare, family services, etc.) Secondary; Equal partner - 1/2 & 1/2 respected, valued. | |
| Problem solving process 1) Engagement (build a relationship) - show interest; develop trust & report... 2) Collecting data/ intake/screening 3) Identify the problem (identify and define - what does problem mean to client - not us) 4) Assessment (can put it with collecting data) - changes. Analyze significant contributing factors. Look at strengths of client too; resources and recourses within. Motivation to change. Our job is to tap into something so they can see they Should change and want self respect. How has client handled problem in the past? 5) Set goals (short term, long term, contract?) 6) Contract if needed 7) Action Plan (treatment plan) Tasks to be carried out; homework assignments; resources and supports that will be tapped. 8) Evaluation of treatment effectiveness (evaluation should be ongoing) 9) Termination (termination of 1 to 1 - kind of an intensive thing) 10) Aftercare (sending someone to a support group, referring them out, etc.) |

Ecosystems - "Ecological Systems" Person in environment
(really our Focus). Relationships with all the systems we have to deal
with. The most simple system is the individual.![]() How supportive are these relationships, who could I recommend that this client go to when I'm unavailable or in addition to me? |
|
| Cut-Offs (genogram) (or ecomap) - individuals or systems that cut themselves off permanently. It's important to know these things. Because that person influenced the client or vise-versa. Systems have boundaries - open boundaries are usually better - allows for communication to move freely between systems. Look for a balance. Closed Boundaries cut off communication. Individuate - people don't individuate much with closed boundaries. Don't go out into a world and do their own thing. Nuts movie - closed boundaries. | |
| Homeostasis - balance; systems strive for homeostasis - systems resist change. | |
| It's valuable to seperate personal and professional ethics. |
