Handout - Structure of family. Stresses in environment. Social work is a holistic profession. We treat the person IN the environment, or person AND environment. Stressors - unemployment; violence; depression; etc. Illuminate particular problems so they can be dealt with. There have been major shifts in this country because of environmental stressors. Has mental illness increased, or have stressors increased?
We do Not work with the Diagnosis - we Work with the Person.
Critical Thinking is a necessary skill of a social worker. Be discerning - question to find out as much as we can.

Social work roots - 1800's in the Charity organizations, poor, etc. Elizabethan poor laws - pilgrims, colonies... EPL still rules our country. Able-bodied poor should work. From the protestant and puritan ethics (emphasized invididualism.)
Elderly, disabled, mothers with children... relief = clothing and food - In-Kind Benefits. No cash. Children who lived in these situations were moved into Almshouses where they were fed, clothed, housed, and worked hard. Many learned a trade. Sorta like Job Corps I guess.
It's all in perspective. Use of Self. We should be flexible.
Charity Organization Society (COS) 1877 in Buffalo. Volunteers who went to peoples homes and provided HOPE. "Friendly Visitors."
Settlers - very reform-minded. Amazing for their time. Forerunners to current social workers. Taught people english; helped people in rural communities, etc. Helped people get settled; worked with child labor laws. Primarily women of upper middle or upper class. "Hull House" in Chicago.
Conflict between Settlers and COS's - Settlers saw problems in environment, COS's saw problem in person. Settlers tried to bring together different classes of people. 1898 - First School of Social Work was opened - Called the School of Philanthropy. Now it's Columbia University School of Social Work. It's a profession once there is education, rules, and standards.
1920's - Freudian Psychotherapy/Psychoanalysis. "Psychiatric Social Workers." Depression, Denial, Defence mechanisms, etc. Systems, cognitive, etc. "John Bradshaw" from Houston - Big Thing was "Inner Child." Just like Freud... Freudians started in VA hospitals and worked with individuals, groups and families.
After large successful wars (WWII Not Vietnam) - usually find prosperity looming around the corners.
Tom Brockaw - book about experiences of the depression... PTSD (Shell shock)
Ducring and after WWII group therapy started - 'cause they found out it really worked.
1930's - Biggest group was Alcoholics Annonymous - wasn't looked at as treatment.
Group therapy started because there were sooo many people with shell-shock. It's powerful, has feedback, and has universality. Groups were cost effective as well (Many clients, few therapists.)
Social Security Act - Handout. SSA pulled people out of poverty. One of the 1st times the federal government put together programs for people who couldn't make it. (Roosevelt = democrat lol) Linden Johnson - War on Poverty. Medicare came about that way.Social Securty - all has to do with workers.
What is a Social Insurance Program vs. Public Assistance - SI - no stigma; pa - stigmatized. Difference between the 2. SI - based on work record; PA not work related. Means tested - PA - they will examine assetts.
Whoopi Goldberg had been on welfare for Years.
School of Social Work - Film... Charles Kuralt - University of Chapel Hill in North Carolina. (First university in the US.) CBS broadcaster is Charles Kuralt.
Residual and institutional - different views of social welfare. Residual - money only to those who cannot get help elsewhere. It's a stigma; should be required to work even with minimum wages. Shouldn't be right/entitlement. Conservatives. Peole on welfare become dependent.
Istitutional - society should help those who cannot help themselves. Should no longer be a stigma; individuals should not be blamed.
Affirmative action - University of Michigan; supreme court backed the law school because they felt there should be diversity.
Social Injustice - Les Miserables.
Feminization of poverty...
Blaming the Victim - book. We have to look at the stressors that cause a problem.
Poverty does serve a function within our society. Poor do menial jobs so others don't have to.
Generalist vs. Specialist. Micro, Mezzo, Macro. Macro - community, writing policy, research, etc. Micro - one to one, individual. Mezzo - family and small groups.
Quantitative research - go into field as a participant or observer.
Different roles handout. Social worker roles - advocate, mediator, counselor, administrator. Use of self - how you come across; be trusted; etc.
