~Meeting "Andy Cherry"
~His laboratory is the community.
~"Practice Wisdom" - very good concept to keep in mind.
~Social work is a practice-based profession instead of university-based (like
sociology)
~This class will "Expand [our] empiracle knowledge whether we want it
to or not."
~Feducia - word I had to look up... (dunno)
~"Necessary but not sufficient" - term he wants us to know. We need
this class, but this class solely will not get us to graduation.
~We might not have a midterm, or we might have one and he might not grade
it - so that we know how well we would have done and can study.
~There won't be "mystical choice" or "multiple guess"
if we have one - it'll more than likely be essay.
~One of our goals is to pass the comps - and through this class we should
be able to pass the research questions on the comps. His goal is that we be
well-trained and well-educated after our endeavor with this program.
~Overdosing on amphetamines is as close as the non-insane population can get
to insanity...
~Head start brought the daycare standards way up in this country because of
all the studies that have been done with children in headstart and beyond.
~People from the US aren't the only Americans - we shouldn't be so ethnocentric.
~Statistics and research isn't just numbers - "we don't need to know
numbers to do research." We need to be able to think through a problem,
assess it, etc.
~SPSS - Fortrean is what it's built on - generally used in engineering programs.
SPSS was his language for his doctorate.
~When working with a population we need to be aware of what's going on within
their culture or subculture - if we're working with teens we need to know
who their role models are, what the latest fashions are and what latest slang
is out there.
~"rips you off" - lies to you... clients are going to sometimes
be deceitful with you...
~Close-head injuries - a man Dr. Cherry worked with could remember the time
before the accident when the patient/client was smart...
~Huntington's Disease... I need to look this up more...
~"Drunk people" out in front of the mental health hospital - gave
them a cane and people didn't call in and bitch as much. - The general public
can excuse the staggering and such when there looks like there's a physical
reason for it...
~"Deaf people are a little more paranoid" - what would you think
if you were in their shoes?
~Our profession needs to have more research on Caregiver burden... Caregiver
burden is mainly an emotional thing... More depression = less energy = more
burden = more depression...
~There are things that professionals would never miss... one time he had a
"professional" call him about a drug-abuser who kept relapsing...
the patient kept relapsing because the depression he was suffering was never
dealt with.
~We need to develop a professional attitude by developing our critical thinking
skills, ask why a problem is a problem, methodologically work through an assessment,
etc.
~Frued - Cocain papers... cocain is fantastic for depression. A lot of clients
do amphetamines because they're depressed... Alcohol is one of the best anti-anxiety
drugs we have.
~(Dr. Cherry was in the army, and was a really good chess-player... would
have teams of men against him. lol)
~Socratic approach with questions - he'll ask our small groups to do a qualitative
analysis of questions he asks.
~Powerpoint presentation...
~Reliable knowledge - being up to the empiracle level... we need to become
"scientific practitioners" - we need our knowledge based on research
to achieve positive outcomes.
~We need to know what interventions are SAFE AND EFFECTIVE - only intervention
that has been empiraclly tested as sound, safe, and effective is cognitive
therapy...
~(Statistical info would've helped Jackie be able to keep her assistant at
ACT.)
~In order to become a better practitioner we need to be able to evaluate our
own practice.
~we can learn alot, how the clients view us and our services.
~Quality, qualitative is grounded theory.
~Univerian analysis - 1 subject studied (ex. Students in college); Bivarian
analysis - 2 subjects studied (ex. Students in college AND male/female status);
Multiverian - 3+ subjects (ex. college students; male/female; AND sophmore,
junior, senior, etc+).
~The info we learn in this class - we need to find something to connect it
with that's already in our heads. We need to avoid building a new house and
just add more furniture. 8) - love how he says that. lol.
~Grant-writing can get you a lot of money for your program.
~"Anectdone is not plural for data." - need quantitative stuffs
for data...
~slide 3 - kind of like watching a bank-robbery. No one sees the same thing.
~"Common sense isn't always the common sensical thing to do."
~Authority (page 5 in book) gets us in the most trouble. We can't just blindly
follow authority.
~When we merged the philosophical and the methodological is when we got better
as a practice. Instead of just debating the number of teeth in a horse's mouth
they actually went and checked also. - Came up with a theory, checked it.
~?Think of a number of ways we use hypothesis in everyday life...
Cooking - adding a certain amount of salt and thinking it'll make the food
taste better. Add too much and it's awful, add to little and you don't have
enough. lol.
One great example is milk - seeing if it's good or not. Do we just chug away
to see if it's good? No, we check the date, then we smell it, then we might
pour ourselves a glass and have a tiny taste... - so we use the scientific
method all the time in our everyday life.
