Lecture Notes - Sunday April 4, 2004
As social workers we shouldn't make too much of the label and forget about
the person. We should treat the person, and not the label. Affects how we
think about ourselves.
Labeling promotes stereotyping if we're not cautious.
We focus on deficits with DSM-IV - but should put much more emphasis on the
strength orientation.
Diversity
honor diversity
How would we feel if we woke up tomorrow and were very different? I'm a 28yr
old female who's American and Christian... how would I feel if I woke up tomorrow
and was a 90 year old Asian Catholic Male?
Imagine how people would react to us...
We're asking our clients to change.
See the movie Hot Chick.
"Funny to wake up as a man..."
Dr. Burman "What would you do with it?"
LOL (not what she meant. lol)
How does it feel to be descriminated against?
"Mona Lisa Smiles" - with Julia Roberts - Roles for women... Pat
went to Wellsley college and was horrified - they would litteraly round up
the women and cattle-herd them off to go to dances where they'd meet men and
HAD to find partners to become engaged with, etc. Went for an "Mrs. degree"
Pretty Woman - she was looked down on when she tried to shop because she didn't fit their stereotype.
That 70's Show - women at an auto dealer, repair shop, or buying an appliance because of color. Red was mad 'cause women just want to pick an appliance out because of the color... They don't care about the RPM of the motor in the blender unless he puts it in ways they can understand. Puree your fruit 50 times quicker, etc.
