CANNES --- Dwight Yoakam will make his helming debut with "South of Heaven, West of Hell," a Western set in 1907
starring Yoakam, Vince Vaughn, Peter Fonda and Billy Bob Thornton.

Pic, which starts shooting this week in Arizona, is about a U.S. marshal who vows to bring to justice a gang made up of his
former surrogate family after the Spanish Civil War.

Yoakam and Stan Berthaud scripted.

Bridget Fonda, Michael Jeter, Paul Reubens and Bud Cort also star in the $ 5.5 million pic, which is being financed with
independent money.

Darris Hatch and Gray Frederickson are producing. Domestic and foreign rights are still available on the project, which is
skedded for a five-week shoot.

Yoakam and Thornton appeared in "Sling Blade" in 1997.

Yoakam, who last appeared in "The Minus Man" opposite Owen Wilson and Janeane Garofalo, is managed by Hatch.
