ptab)In The Style Of Surf Guitar by Rusty Cash Rusty Cash Rusty Cashÿ> This tab goes along with the audio version of "In The Style Of Surf Guitar - Example 1". You can download this and the jam track free at mp3.com as long as I have an account there. They are under the artist name, Rusty Cash. The song is an example of a Surf Medley. Most of the material is original but it was intended to sound like other artists. Since most surf tunes have a general theme, it's real easy to add several themes together to make a medley. The last artist I'm familiar with who did this was Junior Brown. Listen to any surf band and chances are they have some type of medley recorded. The whole idea is taking those themes and adding them together. With surf, you don't have to get too technical with scales and modes. You can and they are good to understand. However, most of the licks you come up with will fall out of some type of minor scale. Usually you can hear the backing chords come together behind the lick. It basically starts with a cool lick and the everything falls together after that. A good popular scale to build some easy licks from is the E natural minor. I've included that in several positions with the tab. Part A, C, E, F, and G will all come from that scale. Another popular minor scale for E is the E phrygian. You might like to think of C major starting with the 3rd tone E. I use this over part B, D, and H. You could also think of it as A Aeolian or natural minor. They are all the same thing. I would look at it in terms of E so you can hear the difference between the two scales. But in the parts where I use this, the rhythm leads off with an A minor. So it may be easier to you to look at it that way. You'll be able to tell the difference. These parts all sound like "Walk Don't Run" - Venturas. One cool thing to notice over that part is the similiarities with classical type sound. A lot has to do with the chord progression but E phrygian is very close to sounding like the E harmonic minor scale, which definately has the classical quality. There is just a couple of places where I need a Bb. That with the addition of the F note will come from F major. I would'nt geto wrapped up in the modal thoughts. I would just spend time playing with the two E minor scales to make yourself some cool surf licks. The song is fairly easy to play. I don't hybrid pick or thumb pick like I normally do. Just use a regualr pick unless you like the other way better. Try to keep a constant up - and - down stroke pattern through out the whole song. Towrads the end where it sounds close to Peter Gunn and Secret Agent man, you'll need to tremelo pick in order to play the sixteenth notes sorta like Dicjk Dale. The song was meant to be a lesson. You don't have to like it or get every lick note for note. Feel free to experiment with your own licks along with the jam track. For you guys in middle and high school, this stuff is pretty easy to play. You don't have to be great nor do you have to have the greatest equipment. Everyone likes surf. It will win a talent show everytime. I guarantee it!
